Algerian and French Naval forces should complete Monday two weeks of joint maneuvers in the Mediterranean, said Saturday the commander of the French frigate F714 GUEPRATTE Benoît Courau, ground handling in Algiers. This exercise of surveillance and security in the Mediterranean Sea, called “Rais Hamidou 08" named after the famous last privateer of Algiers, began in Toulon (France) from February 1 to 6, with a stop in Oran (western Algeria) from 10 to 11, then at the port of Algiers from 13 to 16 February.
Commander Courau said at a press conference on board the French ship that this exercise was part of the consolidation of cooperation between French and Algerian naval forces "in surveillance and maritime safety".
"The maneuvers planned for this year to advance the interoperability and exchange of experiences between the two marines to test their capacity to jointly respond to situations such as helicopter crashes at sea or the smuggling of drugs and arms and human trafficking," he said.
Algerian navy participated in these exercises at sea with the missile launcher corvette Salah Raïs and El Qirch frigate.
The exercise, conducted jointly from Toulon by a Franco-Algerian staff, is part of the cooperation agreement in the field of Defense signed by both countries on 21 June 2008.
